Technique, discomfort and warm-ups
How to know when a repetition or exercise should stop.
The short answer
Use the largest comfortable range you can repeat, keep the setup stable and stop when pain appears or the movement changes materially.
Make repetitions comparable
Use the same seat setting, grip, range and body position each time. Control the change of direction. When range shortens, the body starts swinging or posture changes significantly, the set has reached its useful endpoint.
Warm up without turning it into another workout
Warm-ups rehearse the movement and confirm that the setup feels comfortable. Use one or two lighter sets before the first demanding lower-body movement and one lighter set before the first press or pull. Accessories usually need no separate warm-up.
Remember: Muscular effort is expected. Sharp, unusual, radiating or worsening pain is a reason to stop and review the exercise.
