Choose exercises you can actually progress
A practical test for deciding whether an exercise belongs in the programme.
The short answer
The best beginner exercise is comfortable, repeatable, measurable, available and simple enough that the target movement—not balance or confusion—limits the set.
The five-question test
- Can I perform it without sharp or joint-specific pain?
- Can I reproduce the same setup and range each session?
- Does the intended pattern limit the set before balance does?
- Can I add load in small practical increments?
- Is it normally available, with one planned substitute?
Machines are a useful feature, not a compromise
Machines reduce setup and stabilisation demands. That lets a beginner focus on range, control and effort, and makes a difficult set easier to stop safely. Free weights can work too; they are simply not compulsory.
Remember: Use the least complicated option that comfortably trains the pattern.
